Island survival

Getting started on a Minecraft Skyblock server

A small island makes early mistakes expensive. Server variants can change starter resources, recipes, generators and progression, so the local tutorial comes first.

3 min readUpdated

Protect limited starter resources and understand the island and team rules before progressing. Do not use a reset as a shortcut to fixing a small mistake.

Before you start

  • Confirm whether you joined Skyblock, OneBlock or another island variant.
  • Read the starter tutorial and the island’s recovery policy.
  • Check how to return to your island and what happens after falling.

Follow these steps

  1. Create or enter the island using the local tutorial

Follow the server’s menu or documented command. BentoBox BSkyBlock commonly uses /island, but servers can change aliases or use another plugin. Inspect the starter chest and note which resources cannot yet be replaced.

  2. Secure a work area before harvesting

Make a safe standing area and storage plan. Avoid losing every sapling or the only source of a required material. Collect drops carefully and keep essential resources away from edges and hazards.

  3. Follow this variant’s resource-generation rules

Check the server’s documented generator layout or tutorial rather than trying random liquid arrangements. Custom generators can behave differently from vanilla ones. Confirm how to recover a lost resource before experimenting.

  4. Choose a small first progression goal

Look for the starter challenge, food source or supported shop that unlocks the next step. Check island limits before building large farms. A leaderboard score can depend on an addon and is not a universal measure of your progress.

  5. Invite carefully and treat reset actions as destructive

Check what joining a team does to your existing island, inventory and ownership. Give only needed access. Read every reset or transfer confirmation: it can remove an island or its progress, and staff may not be able to recover it.

Common mistakes to avoid

Spending all starter materials before learning replacements

Keep a small reserve until a reliable replacement path exists. Ask for help before using your final essential resource.

Using instructions for another island system

Commands, protection and challenge rewards differ. Use the documentation linked by your current server.

Common questions

Is OneBlock exactly the same as Skyblock?

No. OneBlock usually structures progress around a regenerating block, while other island modes have different starting layouts and resource paths. The server can customize either.

Can I safely accept a team invite?

Ask what happens to any island you already own. Team membership can change access or ownership and may have consequences for existing progress.

Should I reset if I lose a starter resource?

First use the official support or recovery instructions. Resetting may delete far more than the missing item and can have limits.
